About Us
At Western Justice Center, we empower young people and the adults who support them with the skills for real conflict resolution—listening, understanding, problem-solving, and repairing harm.
When young people, educators, families, and community partners learn and practice how to respond to conflict with empathy, we build trust, confidence, and a sense of shared responsibility that endures.
We envision communities where conflict is an opportunity for repair, leadership and learning—not exclusion. We trust young people as problem-solvers and help communities build the tools to sustain justice from within.
WJC partners with schools, districts, and community partners serving youth to:
- Replace punitive discipline with restorative, relationship-centered systems that build belonging and accountability.
- Equip young people as peer mediators, restorative leaders and agents of change—helping them foster peace and resilience in their schools and communities.
- Build capacity through long-term partnerships, training and coaching—so schools can sustain and share restorative practices on their own.
- Work at every level: empowering students, supporting educators and strengthening district systems for lasting change.
Our Mission
WJC empowers people to strengthen their communities by growing the conflict resolution skills and capacity of youth, educators, schools, and community partners.
Our Core Values
- Prevention over punishment: We prioritize proactive support, skills building and restorative practices—addressing issues early to keep young people connected to learning and growth instead of relying on exclusion or punitive discipline.
- Youth leadership at the center: We trust young people as leaders, problem-solvers and change agents. Their voices shape our programs, and we create real opportunities for them to lead, advocate and transform their communities.
- Equity, healing and opportunity for all: We are committed to advancing racial equity, healing and access—so that every student, educator and family can thrive. Our work breaks down barriers and builds pathways toward inclusion, well-being and success.
- Community-centered: We believe lasting change is rooted in relationships and shared responsibility. We partner with families, educators and community organizations to design solutions that reflect local needs, respect lived experience and strengthen collective resilience.
What Makes Us Unique
- Intergenerational collaboration: We partner with young people, educators, school leaders, families and institutions—recognizing that lasting change requires shared knowledge, confidence and collective accountability across generations and roles.
- Invested for the long term: We focus on multi-year partnerships and continuous learning to build sustainable capacity and support systems change. Even short-term projects are designed to support ongoing growth.
- Multi-level impact: Our approach reaches individuals, classrooms, schools, districts and the wider youth ecosystem. We build skills, relationships, culture, policy and systems for restorative, conflict-resilient and racially just communities.
- From partnership to field-building: We develop curriculum, support continuous learning and help build a community of practice that implements restorative work with quality and consistency. Our goal is resilience, competence and racial equity at every level—so restorative and conflict resolution education become core to effective, inclusive schools and communities.
Our History
“Justice is about inclusion. It is about listening to people and solving problems, not deciding on a winner or a loser.”
– Judge Dorothy W. Nelson
Western Justice Center was founded in 1987 by a group of judges, lawyers and civic leaders led by the Honorable Dorothy W. Nelson, senior judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Western Justice Center was born from Judge Dorothy W. Nelson’s belief that lasting peace is built through understanding, dialogue and community action. In 1987, she gathered fellow judges, lawyers and civic leaders to create a space dedicated to resolving conflict without courts or confrontation.
WJC’s founding members sought out innovative ways to handle conflict by supporting the use of alternative dispute resolution techniques in and beyond the court system. Their aim was for WJC to serve as a thought leader, convener and capacity builder in the field of conflict resolution education. Her vision extended beyond legal disputes, and she saw the potential to equip young people with the skills to navigate differences and shape more just communities.
Today, Western Justice Center partners with schools and communities across Los Angeles County to prepare the next generation of peacemakers, ensuring Judge Nelson’s vision continues to inspire and transform lives.
