WJCF's Executive Director to Receive South Asian Bar Association Public Interest Law
Foundation Public Service Award, 2006.
February 23, 2006
Each year the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California Public Interest
Foundation ("Foundation") honors two individuals who have made significant contributions
to the field of law. This year the Foundation will honor Judge Sanjay Kumar of the Los
Angeles County Superior Court with the Trailblazer Award. Judge Kumar is the first South
Asian American judge appointed to the Superior Court. The Foundation will also honor
Najeeba Syeed-Miller with our Public Service Award. Ms. Syeed-Miller is the Executive
Director of the Western Justice Center Foundation, an organization that teaches peaceful
conflict resolution to children in order to empower them and prevent youth violence.
The Foundation, the charitable arm of the South Asian Bar Association of Southern
California, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting public interest
legal work benefiting the South Asian community and the Southern California community
at large.
The Banquet will also celebrate the significant accomplishments of the Foundation during
2005. Since its inception in 2003, the Foundation raised more than $30,000 which was
used towards the promotion and practice of public interest law. The Fellowship program
provided South Asian American law students with the opportunity to serve underprivileged
communities through summer employment with public interest legal organizations in Southern
California. In 2005, the Foundation also made grants totaling $15,000 to community-based
non-profit organizations to finance the implementation of public interest projects relating to
domestic violence, low-wage labor, health care, and immigration.
"I am honored to be recognized by my peers and for the work that the Western Justice
Center Foundation has done to reduce conflicts and improve access to justice. The South
Asian
Bar Association Public Interest Foundation is an exemplary organization that provides
vital
support for emerging young lawyers and law students interested in the practice of public
interest law," noted Najeeba Syeed-Miller.
