Pasadena Police Chief Bernard Melekian recently recognized the Western Justice Center
Foundation for its contributions to implementing new mediation models in the Pasadena
Police Department during an interview with the Pasadena Star News:
Excerpt below:
"The Internal Affairs department's legally based method of handling complaints was
changed to a dialogue-based mediation process in 2005, he (Cheif Malekian) said.
"The Internal Affairs style is dry, with a tendency to remove the human element from the
equation," said the chief, who introduced community service policing - a geographically
based model which emphasizes decentralization and a focus on neighborhood problem
solving - to the city at the beginning of his tenure.
"The Western Justice Center and the Los Angeles County Bar Association came up with
the mediation plan to mitigate just these kinds of problems."
