September 16, 2006, Pasadena, Ca. The Western Justice Center Foundation, in
partnership with the UCLA School of Law Evan Frankel Environmental Law & Policy
Program and The Keystone Center, hosted a three-day Environmental and Public Policy
Facilitation Training on its beautiful Pasadena campus at 55 S. Grand Avenue. The
three-
day training held September 14-16, was the first of its kind in Southern California
and
featured renowned trainer Mike Hughes of The Keystone Center, an organization
whose
mission is to develop solutions to societal issues through the innovative use of
deliberative
frameworks, inclusive processes, and scientific information.
The training culminated in a banquet dinner featuring opening remarks by Dr. Frank D. Gilliam
Jr., Associate Vice Chancellor for Community Partnerships and Professor of Political Science
and Public Policy at the University of California Los Angeles, and a keynote address by Pete
r Adler, President of The Keystone Center.
During the training, participants were shown how to explore the competing interests involved
in complex environmental and public policy decisions and to structure processes that are
inclusive of all stakeholders. Participants were also introduced to methods for navigating the
legal and political regimes particular to environmental conflicts.
This training marks the beginning of the Western Justice Center Foundation's exploration of a
future program area in environmental conflict resolution.
You may access the training manual and supplemental readings by visiting our website at www.westernjustice.org.
