| WJCF Trains Parents and Students at the School District Level in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution |
On Saturday November 19, 2005 WJCF Staff and Volunteers assisted with the 9th
Annual Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Parents Training Parents
Conference. Two one hour workshops were given in Conflict Resolution Strategies
for Parents in English and Spanish. These workshops were well attended and almost
all participants requested further training in Conflict Resolution. A parent stated that the
workshop helped her "plan ahead and have a better approach to conflict situation with
her 4 year old and her teacher". Another parent shared that he would now make more
of an effort to "get to know his child's teacher and to create solutions". Parents learned
how to effectively negotiate with school district officials when problems arise and to
use collaborative strategies at home.
Four one hour workshops were given to elementary school students using Ouch the
Egg to discuss arguments, disagreements and bullying happening at their schools.
These students were given specific and practical strategies to help them better
address such situations internally and externally. The students liked the interactive
nature of the training and commented on how it helped them identify ways other
than fighting to address conflicts. Several parents and teachers, who observed the
workshop, stated that they would like to "bring this workshop to all PUSD
schools".
Finally WJCF hosted an all day resource table for parents, students, teachers, and
administrators. This table was managed by a bi-lingual volunteer who was able
to address questions in English and Spanish. For more information about this
